The Micro Showcase started as a vacant Washington DC alley lot next to a graveyard. Purchased and improved by Brian Levy, the lot then became a tiny house pop-up from 2013-2020. Free monthly tours were run of ‘best-in-class’ micro structures (all under 350 ft2) including the AIA award winning Minim House, the Studio Shed, the BoomBox music studio, and the Minim WorkSpace. The lot became a hands-on showcase of sustainable technologies and micro-furnishings, as well as an organic demonstration garden, micro-orchard and outdoor event space. The Showcase also hosted a tiny house build with DC students through DC’s Academy of Construction & Design. The Micro Showcase hosted over 10,000 visitors over the years, and leveraged some of those visitors to successfully lobby the city during the DC zoning code rewrite to allow more micro dwellings (accessory dwelling units, or ADU’s) and alley development across the District. The Showcase now lives on as an on-line resource for micro-building and micro-living at MicroShowcase.com.
